Stimming

Stimming is a word to describe different behaviours such as:

  • Fidgeting
  • Flapping
  • Twirling
  • Yo-yoing
  • Jumping
  • Running
  • Shouting
  • Chewing

Often these behaviours are repetitive and help to express feelings and burn off energy.

You might feel pressure not to stim, to try and fit in and be ‘normal’. This is called masking. But stimming can be a really good way to help cope with stress. Don’t be embarrassed to stim. If someone has a problem it’s their lack of knowledge.

  • Don’t stare
  • Don’t try and stop me
  • Accept autism!

We feel that schools and workplaces should provide a safe space for stimming. If you feel like it isn’t a safe environment or you want some privacy when you are in public, a toilet can be a good place to go when you feel like you need to stim.

Messages from the Your Autism Crew

It's important that people understand that stimming is a part of who we are
If I didn't stim, it wouldn't be me.

If you take away any aspect of a human, is that person still the same person?
When my brother gets really excited, he does lots of stimming.

No one is normal, we are all unique in our own special way. Autism just happens. I'm perfect, it is not a disorder.
Because you can't turn back time and not be diagnosed with autism. Be who you are!

What stimming behaviours do you enjoy?
